Module 5 – Using Instant Messaging (IM)
Objective: To know how to instant message (IM).
INTRODUCTION
Instant messaging (IM) is a collection of technologies used for real-time text-based communication between two or more participants over the Internet. IM allows effective and efficient communication, allowing immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply and helping to maintain close, collaborative communication.
INSTRUCTION
For this series of lessons, you’ll want to verify that you can successfully log in to, set up, check, send and respond to instant messaging (IM).
There are three different lessons for you to complete.
1. Setting up your Instant Message "contacts"
2. Sending and receiving and instant message
3. Downloading and using the instant message "client" or program.
INSTANT MESSAGE CONTACTS
First, to set up your "Instant Message" contact list, you need to do the following:
- Log into COS email
- In the "mail" window, click on "add contact"

- In the next window that pops up, click on the "phonebook icon"

- In the next window, in the search window, type in the name of the person you want and hit "enter" on your computer,, then click on add , and then on "ok". Add Rob, Mary, Chai, your 6 teachers, and at least 2 students who are in one of your classes who you can ask for help.
2. Now have an IM conversation with another adult or student (The conversation needs to be at least 6 lines with at least 3 responses from the other person). Then, copy and paste your conversation into a Word document. (or you can take a screen picture).
3. Downloading the WinLive IM client on your home computer.
To do this, go to the Moodle Home page (http://ohsmoodle.cusd.com/) and click on the right side where it says "messenger". Follow the directions to download and install.
ASSIGNMENTS
5.01- Has added “buddies” in my IM account – including Mary, Rob, Chai, Kelli, all my teachers and at least 2 students in one of your courses. Make a list of everyone on your IM list.
5.02 - Has sent and received an IM to a teacher, student or another adult in the school. Copy and paste the IM conversation you had in a word document. (or do a screen picture)
5.03 - Knows how to download the WinLive IM client to use for IM. Date you viewed the instructions to do this and/or downloaded on your home computer.
